Three day cruise - Weston to Ilfracombe. Wed 12th Sept There she is - some of her Weston mud washed away. I was amazed when we got into the dingy and alongside that I could see her keels ! - I'm just not used to water you can see through. Nor really the best of pics - but I did bring my old Nikon on this trip - so have most of these images at better qualty when I get around to scanning them. I think its a about time I bought myself a decent digital
The ship behind is the Oldenberg - the Lundy Island supply ship - and shortly after I took this the Barmoral came back in. She berths alongside the steps right of pic. Pleasant sort of place - though a somewhat erratic layout. Its very much a harbour, with a small town attached to it - and very crowded in the inner harbour - and I've never seen so many fenders on boats in my life. Its known for a bad swell if the wind is to the north and east. I was looking down wondering how some of them manage to get out - big boats too, all presumeably bilge keelers. Expensive stuff too. We were all on are own out on the visitors berths. The fairground was a far from quiet evening event - but it shut up shop at eleven and everthing went quite dead then . We slept well - she touched out about eleven onto very hard level sand. We'd been on a heel on the mooring Tuesday night. It was as flat as being on the hardstanding - and is a place worth bearing in mind for the future for a scrub down. Decided to get fish and chips form the local chippy to eat back on board. We had a vauge plan to go out to Lundy - but were committed to be back by Friday night - and with little wind forcast decided to take a scenic, close in, run, back up to Blue Anchor Bay - and anchor overnight there. We could then check out the state of the tides in close and the potential shelter and access. Thursday was forecast exactly like Wed - windless. There was a possibility of it breaking up Friday with a cold front expected - eventually breaking this very stable spell warm settled weather. continues - to Combe Martin, Great Hangman, Waterford creek, Lynmouth, Valley of the rocks, Foreland Point, Minehead, Blue Anchor. |
